If my life were a Facebook status, the best way to describe it would be “It’s Complicated”. This is reflected in my music. Like the late great Tupac Shakur, I find myself torn between two twins of myself. There’s that part of me that wants to do the wrong thing. Then there’s that part of me that just wants to fly right. It’s the human condition. The music that I make has gone from what I thought people wanted to hear from me, to what I have to offer to the music community.

I represent what I would like to call Hip-Hop’s statesmen. Adults who have grown up with the culture, and even though we have gone from occupying corners and concerts to boardrooms and business, our love for the culture remains. That’s honesty what I think is lacking right now in music. How many of us can listen to our favorite music and see the lives that we live or even relate to the lyrics that we hear.

I have had accomplishments such as performing in and around the southeast (Atlanta, Carolinas, Philly, Ohio). I am also a voting member with The Recording Academy as well as an ASCAP songwriter. I have also released a book in March 2017 entitled, “Let’s Talk About It-Honest Conversation about Things that Matter”. I am currently pursuing song placements for my new song “Growth”, featuring Levi.

My goal is to successfully promote and market my current single and additional music that I have been writing and recording. The recent death of my brother has grown me considerably (hence the name of my single) as both a writer and a performer. My desire is to present to the music community songs that reflect their life experiences and are at the same time an escape from the troubles they face; or maybe even a solution to the problems that they face.

Chris lends his powerful vocals and mastery of the bass to tell his story of life in the Golden state. The song’s energy mirrors that of the people who live and dream of coming here. It may be Chris’s story of living in this land, but it’s every Californians’ as well.

The Merrymaker’s Orchestrina is a completely original and unique alternative rock trio currently residing in New York City. The uncommon act is the brainchild of songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Ryan Shivdasani. Due to such a wide variety of musical styles exhibited by the band, it is difficult to categorize the music and songwriting into one definitive genre and style. Instead, as an avant-garde artist, Shivdasani prefers to refer to his artistry as an eclectic mix, which he considers to be psychedelic and experimental rock (experimental neo-psychedelia, psychedelic art rock, fusion, and avant-psychedelia).

The trio consists of Shivdasani, assuming the lead role, and a new line-up of two other accomplished musicians; Sal A. Mander on drums, and Daryl Chen on bass. The original two accompanying musicians are Danny Wolf on drums, and Jack Redford on bass. All of the musicians have a complete understanding of Shivdasani’s musical direction which enhances the overall sound.

Ryan was born in New York and grew up in Northern California. He studied at Cal Arts majoring in classical and jazz guitar. While pouring his heart into songwriting, he gigged around Los Angeles, learning more and more about the music business. However, it’s not the business end of music that Shivdasani enjoys, or even knows much about. His mindset is focused on the art of music. If not for that, he probably wouldn’t be involved in it at all. Ryan considers the music industry and business to be the biggest challenge of his career. After his LA music experiences, Ryan moved back to New York where he formed The Merrymaker’s Orchestrina.

Shivdasani is inspired by “anyone that’s good”, as he puts it. Humbled by the New York jazz scene, he feels that jazz artists are essentially the top-level musicians, while maintaining a great deal of respect for rock and pop musicians. Growing up, he was a huge Hendrix and Zeppelin fan. He was also crazy about funk and soul music — basically everything from the 60s. He describes the band’s “sounds-like” category as something between late 60s psychedelia (like Cream and Hendrix), melodic songwriting and arrangement (like The Beatles), and funky pocket playing (like The Headhunters). There are also more contemporary elements, like Chili Peppers, Beck, Nirvana, Radiohead, or Tame Impala, even if that’s not really modern anymore”.

The Merrymaker’s Orchestrina’s new album “ACT 3” was released in late April of 2018. The official music video is forthcoming. The CD can be purchased at the group’s Bandcamp site, CDbaby, iTunes, and other online music distribution portals.

Kyla Imani is the new voice of young women who embody the power of Generation-Z. The New York City-born performer uses her platform in ways that extend beyond creating the average bubbly melody. From writing pieces that address social issues like ‘March For Our Lives’ to singing about the realities of being a “Regular Girl,” who “Sits up in her room,” Kyla Imani is here for every young woman repping “Queen Status” — and she does it all while remaining true to her most authentic self.
Her sound demonstrates a mellow blend of Pop, R&B and Trap music, bringing listeners on a delicate journey that contemplates life, relationships and what it’s really like growing up in today’s world. In 2014, Kyla meticulously recreated Beyonce’s “7/11” music video with a few strategic PG substitutions, recorded her own version of the song, uploaded it to YouTube, and watched the plaudits roll in. MTV praised her ingenuity and imagination, and called the video “flawless.” BET followed suit, dubbing Kyla Imani a rising star with an extremely promising future. In 2016, Kyla unpacked more heat, releasing her first visual EP, Sweet Tea. With her new single, “Sitting Up In My Room,” featuring Jay Critch, Kyla is the relatable voice for teens everywhere! Refusing to be boxed into any category, Kyla Imani is creating her own footprint and defining a style that is hers.

Formed from the halls of Hofstra University in 2015, HOAX is a 5-piece indie alternative soul band hailing from New York. Obsessed with Maj7 guitar chords, vintage bass, and soulful vocals, HOAX found a unique sound around introspective lyrics. Comparisons have been made to other great alternative rockers such as Kings of Leon, Young the Giant, and Arctic Monkeys, but HOAX likes to experiment with elements of pop, R&B, and hip-hop and layer this under alternative and indie-soul roots. The band’s sound is as eclectic as its members but was best summarized by a friend who described their music as “the sound of beautiful sadness.”

HOAX first broke through in 2016 with the growing popularity of their self-released debut single “Beach House”, which was followed by an immersive nine chapter short story on TheStoryOfBeachHouse.com and featured on BuzzFeed’s “28 Brilliant Songs You Need In Your Playlist”. The band would go on to release their singles “Indian Summer” and “Pretty” months after, receiving the attention of notable tastemakers, such as Alternative Press and Indiemono. The release of The Truth and Other Lies and words that end with wh(y) EPs in 2017 were similarly met with astonishing success, garnering features from OldMan Ebro’s Beats 1 Radio show, Spotify’s Indie Songs For Slackers and Alternative R&B playlists, Guys We F****d podcast, and countless college radio stations.

With a mix of Indian, Puerto Rican, Haitian, Ecuadorian, Irish, and Italian blood all in one group, the hyperdiverse band has become renown for their trendy and fashionable style, tenacious DIY mentality, and their strong sensibility for humanity. HOAX’s approach in songwriting perpetually explores intricate yet convoluted themes from empathy to racism in America to the afterlife and seeks to promote meaning through their music. As Ones To Watch puts it, ”The five-piece collective […] aren’t concerned with trifling matters of life. They’re absorbed by the concepts that warrant deep contemplation and that hold the highest degree of merit.”

The band says they’re a close knit group and even though they come from different parts of Brooklyn, they still find time to practice at least twice a week. Born in South Florida by Nigerian immigrants, Starve Marve is an exemplar of the 1st generation American. Consistently torn between American and Afro culture, Starve finds his only balance in the sounds he creates. Greatly encouraged by the individuality of Outkast, Marve traverses cross genre territory influenced by the road trips with his DJ father’s collection of Bob Marley & Fela Kuti, the Boom Bap 90’s he grew up within, and the 8O8’s that have taken over.

Attached is Starve’s single “Fun Mi” (Yoruba: Give Me), which is a young man’s serenade to a girl from back home in Nigeria, whom speaks a different language.

If Soul, Pop, and R&B had a threesome, their baby would sound like Jules and The Jinks.
Jules and The Jinks is the brain child of first-generation native New Yorkers Julissa Lopez and Erik Rosenberg. Despite their different backgrounds (Dominican from The Bronx and Jewish from The Upper West Side) the two were united by their love of Otis Redding, Etta James, and Led Zeppelin. Though they flirt with various genres from Blues, to Funk, to Afro-Pop and Jazz, the music of Jules and The Jinks is best described as Soul. Jules and Erik use the characters, story lines, and melodies of their songs to evoke familiar yet powerful emotions. Jules and The Jinks released their self-titled debut EP on November 7th. AFROPUNK has described the record as “effortlessly chill” and declared the EP’s lead single, No Compromise, “a song that deserves to be blaring from car speakers while driving through borough blocks.”

With a persuasive ease and command of voice singer/songwriter, Phyllis “Phoenixx ” Smith, introduces you to her sound which she coins as “Fusion Music”. This universal sound delivers her moods through music. As a master of mixing the male and female vocal dynamic, she presents vocal flexibility in her tones and sultry prowess, while conveying the message of her music, passion and artistry. “I want my music to be a form of therapy, conceptual and relatable. I want to put my listeners in a feeling, in a moment. I need it to mean something,” Phoenixx explained. Perfecting the vocal quality of the record in order to sell the concept and the idea are key aspects in the creation of her music.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY into a family of artists, Phoenixx discovered her love of music at the age of 3, through her uncle who exposed her to classical and gospel music. Her mother, a lover of literature, her father a musician/singer/songwriter and grandmother, a poet, helped formulate her expansive musical knowledge. With a love of poetry, Phoennix began to work on her writing. “It was a part of my DNA,” she says. Knowing the origin of what she was doing helped develop her deep rooted respect for music. Growing up she attended the Public School Repertory Company in Manhattan where she received her musical education and met key influencers in her career like Wardell Malloy (BMI) who discovered her talents.
At the age of 15, Phoenixx began a mentorship with R&B/Soul singer/songwriter, Edwin “Lil Eddie” Serrano, (currently a vocal coach for the X Factor US and has written for artists including Usher, Janet Jackson, and Nellie Furtado). She worked alongside prominent producer “Steff Nasty” (also known as Steff Reed) and collaborated with up and coming songwriters at Sean Combs’ studio, “Daddy’s House”. Serrano bridged the gap of singer and songwriter by helping Phoenixx merge her poetry with music. This led her to work in several major studios throughout New York City.
She also participated in “The Hip Hop Project,” which was created by Bruce Willis and Queen Latifiah to empower the voices of the youth; the program was the start of Phoenixx’s education as a vocal producer/arranger. She recorded some of her first official records there and was instilled with the philosophy that music resonates with different people in different ways. “People gravitate to people who are themselves and that’s what I feel my music is all about. I do it because it’s a natural ability and I want to give it 100%”, she says.
As a songwriter, Phoenixx has worked with Brandon Hines, producers Chris N Teeb, the Arkitects, JHype, Misto and Pizzi among others. While honing her vocal skills she sang background for Yummy Bingham, Charli Red and Shalik Rivers at 106 & Park, SOB’s, BB Kings and The Bitter End. She credits artists Vanessa Williams, Brandy and Faith for influencing her sound. In 2014 she received a nomination for a Soul Train Music Award for her work with Shaliek Rivers as well a nomination for Out Music Award for her work with Shorty Roc.
Currently focusing on a new 4 song project, Phoennix is looking to change people’s perspectives on music. She creates her music from a vast array of influences in gospel, r&b, pop, and alternative genres. Inspired by these different elements, Phoenixx continually explores her sound as an artist and producer. “I have a very weird and diverse background, like a big gumbo of sounds and elements and it influences the songs.” Passionate about execution, cadence and vocal production, her point is to make a great record. Her music is crafted to keep people interested and compelled.
Finding her way as an artist is still a journey. Phoenixx attends master classes to perfect her skills and continues to study ways to tell her stories and evoke feelings through her music. With a growing fan base she looks forward to bringing her universal sound to a larger audience.

If you didn’t know any better, you might think soulful, eclectic songstress Kamilah (Gibson) was secretly a superhero. Creating luscious, intense soundscapes with her wide-ranging voice (This chick has been able to bust out the high notes in Minnie Ripperton’s “Loving You” since she was a child, enjoying incredible albums with her mother at home.), Kamilah is posed to set a standard for musicians everywhere. And though her music career is just taking off, she seems to have a handle on the life she has brought about for herself, as she wears many hats at her full time job at a graphic design firm, handles many logistics with her budding career, and still somehow manages to find time to create magical, mellifluous, meaningful music. And though her superpowers seem palpable in the instrumentation and vocal harmonies in her music, she has so much more unbridled magnetism to unleash upon the world.

Kamilah might say she didn’t quite see a music career for herself as a possibility until after she placed at a local performance competition at The Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, but her roots give light to a well-rounded and cultured life growing up in The Bahamas. Her childhood was full of memories listening to some of the greatest musicians of our time with her mother and learning the jazz ropes with her father. Music was the constant that kept her grounded and helped to teach her about life, and that truth is at the core of why she wants to continue to create it, both for herself and others. Admits Kamilah, “Music is very cathartic. It can get you through some of the most elevating and traumatizing times, and many people associate music with memories. I try to make music that helps people find their way through their experiences and grow from them- It helps me in that way and I want to share that with people.”

Her upcoming debut EP Learning Curve is a true blend of genres, offering up jazzy lines (“The Love You Need”, “HeartFeels”, “Dark Skin | Coconut Oil”) amidst tunes with obvious R&B roots (“Careless Thieves”, “Losing My Pride”, and soulful pop (“Letters”, “Dangerous”). But what is perhaps the most beautiful aspect of her new release is that the Learning Curve she refers to is one she has experienced in many aspects of her life. Through her growth over the years, she has written and produced songs that entertain struggles with existentialism, racism, sexism, culture, love and many more hard topics. And instead of burying those difficult lessons deep, she has brought them to light in a way that we can relate to. “I want to make music that doesn’t deflate you,” Kamilah explains. “Like Erykah Badu or Sade. They address important things but don’t leave you out on a ledge. They leave you feeling hopeful or inspired. That’s important for me.”

Kamilah has reached that goal, if we do say so ourselves, a fact that is especially apparent in the last track of Learning Curve, a beautiful and introspective track titled “Dark Skin | Coconut Oil”. And because she is a total empath, Kamilah truly feels the emotions of the songs she creates as she sings them, making this one of the most fulfilling – and perhaps difficult – songs to write and perform live. But with the catalog of music she has yet to release this year – before and after Learning Curve is introduced to the world – and the widespread relatability evidenced in the words of her debut single “So Long” (ft. Sho), there is so much more beauty to behold. And if anyone can continue to champion tough, thought-provoking topics (i.e. gender stereotypes and colorism) through a honeyed soundscape, Kamilah is definitely the one. As someone who has admitted that her ideal superpower would be to physically be in two places at once so that she could create more and be as reliable as possible for more people, Kamilah might be on one of the most selfless adventures we’ve witnessed. (Save for, perhaps, a superhero or two.) We fully expect that inspiring drive and growing musical prowess to continue to cause heads to turn.

ELEFANTKILLER has been destroying New York City’s live music venues with their unique brand of music and on stage performance which could only be described as “Speed Punk”. Bassist James Lane, guitarist and vocalist Enrique Nazario, and drummer BIG Z combine the rhythmic precision of Megadeth with the reckless, unpolished tongue in cheek lyricism of Suicidal Tendencies and Fear. It’s angry, relentless, and disturbing.
” We sing about breaking shit, war and death, cocaine, crushing pills, and stabbing people that piss us the fuck off, all in the context of trying to deal with everyday life which at times makes you wanna engulf it in hate and fire.”

The Tree Woman of our Day, Oscillating between the realms of Hip-Hop and R&B, the humble yet charismatic Dyna Edyne has been making a name for herself as an emerging artist in the Miami scene. What is a Tree Woman you may ask,
“The beautiful metaphore of a Tree Woman is indeed a speaking image of a woman embracing her growth, her womanhood, and unashamed of her mind, body and soul. This is freedom at its best. That’s why you have a Dyna Edyne freestyling and singing, in love with her body mind and soul; you couldn’t kill her vibe.” –SoundsoBeautiful
Infusing sounds with inspirations such as Aaliyah and Sade (which by the way share the same birthday with DE) There’s been a gap filled between resonating new-age soul music with her accumulating fan base. Branches EP has been penetrating the ears of many as well as “by popular demand” single “F.L.Y” landing placements on UK Amazon’s “Future Jams: Cutting Edge R&B” next to prominent artists like SZA & Kehlani; to getting radio play in her hometown of Miami 100.3FM TheGrind all the way to Nigeria Smooth 98.1FM, there is a natural wittiness in her progress and in her sound a buttery, melodic, soulful, with a hip hop infused delivery that can’t be denied.
With projects being underway, there is still a force to be reckoned, with over 250,000 social media conversations and digital mobile media content as well as her stage performances. Featuring on Festival stages during “Miami Music Week” like Female Brew Fest 2018 to opening up for Trina and being mentioned as an upcoming star on “Sway in the morning” interview with the same Diamond princess, it’s safe to say that the fruits of Tree Woman’s labor are definitely in harvest. “It wasn’t until I discovered Dyna Edyne that the void of soul music in Miami was filled.” -MiamiNewTimes
For now vibe to Branches EP. Single DROPPING SOON! “Fly and free as the leaves of a tree that swing by the wind
She freely sings with style melodies that’d come out of her mind
Quite like a woke and singing bird, resting on the branch of a tree
Raw creativity, mind in bloom like a morning spring, she’s a Tree Woman.”

Where’s Zach? That is the question our three heroes asked as they set out on their sonic adventure just six months ago. It was then that Rey, Gavin, & the anonymous rapper convened in the bare, acoustic-friendly, reverb-heavy Fairfax basement to arrange their musical mission to find Zach. With the rhythmic metaphorical lingo of the anonymous rapper, Rey’s eclectic and sultry chord progressions, and Gavin’s hip hop and pop/rock infused drum patterns, failure is an unknown concept. On the heels of the completion of their debut EP, ‘Home for the Summer’. Now they bring their melange of influences to the world, where they attempt to let any and all know just how important it is to answer the question that soon everyone will be asking: just where exactly is Zach?

It’s rare to find a hip-hop artist who appeals to everyone from all walks of life. Xavier does just that, proving himself to be that unique artist through his vivid, poetic and real life – though upbeat and optimistic – lyrics.

Xavier’s generation-defying appeal comes in part because of his live band. A gifted, smooth and well-trained group that includes trumpet, keys, guitar, bass, and drums. After years of performing alongside a DJ, Xavier decided it was time to task a crew of expert instrumentalists to help him create a live experience that’s unparalleled in the world of hip-hop. They gently wrap his insightful lyrics in energetic and accessible jazz that consistently captivates crowds of all ages.

While the band’s smooth, patient strumming draws you in, the lyrical portrait Xavier paints of this often gritty world is what leaves audiences of all backgrounds feeling they’re one with a peer or someone who has genuinely lived in their dirt-stained shoes. That’s because they are: Xavier is all of us.

Before Xavier ever opened up for Hip Hop pioneers such as; Mobb Deep, Zion I and Rakim, he was raised in Los Angeles by a single mother and eventually wound up homeless – sleeping in his car until he could make a few dollars to lay his head on an actual pillow.

Now he’s a single father, and the lessons he first learned on the streets of L.A., and now Las Vegas pour out when he’s on stage. When Xavier performs his acclaimed song “Sunshine,” it’s clear that he longs to be a good father and positive role model.

“We just got to teach our kids they can change the world,” Xavier raps with his calm though upbeat tone. “They used to tell me, ‘Try them drugs.’ I ain’t never try it.”

Xavier’s heart doesn’t just pour out in his lyrics; he also backs it up with action. He has taken part in feeding the homeless as well as hosted and organized his first annual Toy Drive, which brought out some of Las Vegas’ best talent to pay it forward for kids in need. He’s also played a benefit concert for the Las Vegas Victims’ Fund, as well as performing for the neglected and abused children who live at St. Jude’s Ranch.

Xavier has appeared on Fox, NBC, and Las Vegas Now News. He also sold out The Bunkhouse Saloon for his EP release in 2017. Shortly after he held a self-promoted headlining show in Hollywood, CA. Xavier’s success has quickly carried over into the new year. In January alone Xavier hosted his first sold out Artist Seminar, was named an “act to follow” in 2018 by The Las Vegas Weekly and was voted as the “Best Singer-Songwriter” by Desert Companion Magazine.

“Lately I’ve been experiencing what it feels like to have freedom within my music. Having that translate to a record is one of the best feelings ever. I started my music as a faith-based kinda thing. I never lost the faith just changed the way I translated my stories to reach the most people. It never lost that passion faith brings, and has grown even more since then.”

Born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Los Angeles, David Robinson is a 19 year old singer, songwriter, and producer that makes music straight from the heart. He draws from musical influences such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Beyonce in order to give his listeners an unforgettable experience. However, David did not always know that he wanted to write his own music. Taking after his grandmother, David grew up a classically trained pianist, playing music by legendary composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. At the age of 11, David began performing in the Musical Theatre Club at Millikan Middle School, before studying Music Vocals at LACHSA. Here, David began studying opera, musical theatre, and contemporary music. At the age of 15, David’s grandmother passed away, which impacted David heavily. He knew that he had a special connection with his grandmother, and decided to write an entire album in her honor, composed and produced entirely by him, at age 16. David went on to attend Berklee College of Music at age 17 and began drafting up his sophomore album “Millennial” which would feature the talents of musicians that David had met at Berklee. At age 18, David released his sophomore album, which got him his first broadcast interview at USC, as well as his first radio play on Chicago radio station VIBE-IN. Fresh off of the release of his newest single “BET”, David Robinson has made it clear that he is an artist to be watched.

Ida Divine has flourished into one of the most apt, and exquisite Independent Artist in her genre. She is that oddity that can deliver the Motown style of song without missing a pitch. Her voice is intense and sultry, and when those lyrics are set free during performances or even a practice session, she seduces the hearts and minds of any listener that takes an interest in her.

IDA has hit singles such as “Grow Up,” “Time,” “IG My Shoe Game” and “Sometimes” just to name a few ; these singles have traveled worldwide to California, New York, Philadelphia, Georgia, Miami, Virginia, Chicago, Nairobi, Ghana, Nigeria, Toronto, Australia, Paris and Poland. She’s performed alongside Phonte, Lady Saw, Raekwon, Dead Prez, Anthony David, Pete Rock & CL Smooth and Naughty By Nature. She won Best R&B female vocalist for the Carolina Music Awards in 2009 for her a mix tape release “1979” after being out for only a short span of six months. Ida also won Best Female
R&B artist at the 2012, Queen City Awards. Hanus TV nominated Ida for her best cover, and produced rendition recordings of “Poison.” This “Divine” entity has a feature in Four Magazine, Creative Loafing, Ihiphop, The Examiner, On Smash, Hanus TV, and Rodney Perry Live. Ida Divine’s following compare her style and delivery to the Multi Grammy Award Winner Lauryn Hill. In my opinion, there is no comparison to another artist or lyricist. With her project “Molecular Legato”, her statement is clear, and she is just a creative damsel that’s stressing the message of artistic freedom. Ida’s humble, and peaceful nature is a great deal like “Razia Sultana”. When you combine those two strong qualities with her bravura, lyrical expression, in addition to her slayer-stage presence; you already know that she is the definition of artistry ascended, and has created a new trend of evolutionary-soul.

Seaberg is a hip-hop, alt-jazz, and neo-soul band featuring multi-instrumentalist Taylor Seaberg, Justin Halverson (bass), and Carlos Kelley (drums). Often soulful and punk driven, the group carries a vibrant energy. Under their former name of “People Will Dance,” Seaberg’s in-studio performance of their song “Vibes” was featured in City Pages’ Local Frames and the Local Current blog’s Friday Five music video roundups. Seaberg has also performed at an MPR sponsored album release show for Chastity Brown’s “Silhouette of Sirens” at The Fitzgerald Theater, a Greenroom Magazine sponsored show for Oshun, as well as Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Third Thursday Art + Lit events.

In late 2016, Seaberg released their first demoed recordings. The name of the EP–‘The People Will Dance Tapes’–nods towards the origins of the band while looking toward the future. Songs like ‘Fool’s Gold’ pay homage to the stylings of jazz guitarist George Benson melding social commentary about hook up culture along with breakup blues. Taylor showcases their auto-biographical lyrical abilities on tracks like ‘I Don’t Know’ and ‘Run.’

When not performing with the full band, Taylor can be found performing their solo original music under the same name.

As seen on Sway in the Morning during SXSW 2018. Destiny’s first EP, “Release Me EP,” debuted 6.9.17 and she hopes to spark change in the minds of others with her vibrant poetic sound. She works with a set few of producers, and her musical influences stem from Tupac, Left Eye, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, and Beyonce. The message tupac carries in his music along with the stories inspire her to write. Destiny being a writer of poetry where boundaries can be crossed, Erykah Badu and Lil Wayne have a fun twist to their style of writing and wordplay which is similar to her music. Destiny is multitalented and would not mind picking up her saxophone again. D-Andra was born Diandra Farquharson, a reggae baby born in Brooklyn but spent her early childhood in Jamaica. One of five children, she was raised by her grandmother in Vineyard Town, Kingston. Daughter to reggae legend Sammy Dread, she attended Vaz Preparatory School by day and sat in on afternoon studio sessions with her father. By the age of 17 she graduated from Wolmer’s High School for Girls with an overall understanding of her Jamaican heritage and culture she maintained a strong affinity for music and sports.

Switching gears from her childhood ambitions of becoming an accountant, her musical abilities, family background and creative interests in school, lead D-Andra towards starting her own band in 2009. The band called “AGuynAGirl” has regulary enjoyed opportunities to play for local New York City news stations and has taken stage in some the city’s well-established bars and restaurants. During her time with AGuynAGirl, D-Andra enjoyed the opportunity to develop her skills and began branching out into more solo projects by late-2016.

In late 2016, D-Andra also had the opportunity to collaborate with another Brooklyn-based artist named Noel Black (of Corvus Entertainment). The collaboration resulted in a socially charged EP entitled “Black Royalty.”

Most recently, D-Andra has been working on a new album entitled “Soapbox Electra.” The first single “Da New” was released in spring 2017, earned her a spot on AfroPunks Battle of the Bands contest that summer, where she placed as far as the semi-finals. The album is shaping up to be a rhythmic, and lyrically poised collection of tracks from eclectic influences. On it, D-Andra is creating a sound all her own, highly influenced as much by her Jamaican roots as by her families’ musical legacy. She also draws influence from artists like Kanye West, Missy Elliott and Vybz Kartel. The album is expected to release in 2018.

Sonny joined a band of talented musicians from the New Jersey area who were his best friends – they all grew up together in the church. The friends formed a band called “Plan B” and later changed their name to “The Plan Band.” The Plan Band helped Sonny form his signature sound by introducing him to rhythm and blues. The band then went on to participate in many local and national gigs, including the McDonald’s gospel fest.
The trajectory of Sonny’s musical career changed when his family suffered a terrible four-alarm fire that destroyed their home. Sonny lost everything in the fire, including his prized guitar. Down and out, the life-changing experience inspired Sonny to begin writing lyrics and composing songs to express real-life stories of hope. Sonny’s talent as a guitarist allowed him to share the stage with artists he admired such as Angie Stone, Neyo, and Anthony Hamilton, to name a few. Sonny has played in legendary venues such as the Howard Theatre and BB Kings, alongside the likes of Lyfe Jennings and Elle Varner. In the fall of 2016, Sonny joined Jeremiah’s Kall Productions, designed to help young men move to the next level in their musical careers. Now Sonny has a manager, C. NaTasha Richburg, to support his journey as an artist.
In April 2017, Sonny began his solo artist career, which encompassed travel up and down on the East Coast and throughout New York City. As a solo artist, his style of music comprises a mix of hip-hop, R&B, neo soul, and rock ‘n’ roll immersed in spiritual influences gained as part of his church upbringing. As a young man, Sonny’s baritone vocals are complemented by soulful lyrical interpretations of his lead guitar. On September 26, 2017, Sonny Dumarsais released his first single and video, “Pick Up #TheCall,” which tells a story of a young man filled with anxiety due to experiencing repeated unanswered calls.

March 9, 2018, is the release date for Sonny’s first EP, ”Transition.” This EP is a reflection of Sonny’s life experiences starting with his major adjustment, moving from musician to solo artist. During this time of transition, Sonny’s girlfriend decided she did not want to continue their relationship. He was immediately faced with writer’s block triggered by an aching heart. Sonny was down and out about the end his relationship, which made it difficult for him to find words of hope. In time, the miraculous work of Sonny’s faith unplugged his writer’s block, to forge his musical journey forward, which ultimately made his musical sound take root. Thus, the journey of the EP, “Transition,” began.
The EP compilation exposes Sonny’s signature R&B/neo soul sound, which reflects the heart and soul of his life’s journey. “Transition” has one song in which Sonny expresses feelings of love, hope, and joy, praying his relationship with his girlfriend would last forever. In another song, Sonny articulates his raw feelings of heartache after his girlfriend stopped speaking to him because his musical aspirations caused him to travel and not be home. Sonny uses another song to examine his damaged heart through the eyes of the rearview mirror to witness a love that use to be. “Transition” will serve as the backdrop for Sonny’s follow-up 2019 album.
Sonny longs to inspire audiences to achieve greatness, as he strives to be the voice for those filled with anguish and are seeking songs that express optimism. He desires to speak across generations’ one listening ear at a time. Sonny’s goal is to make music that reflects the times. He also desires to produce music that paints a picture of his life’s experiences that will be recognized by audiences regardless of age. Sonny wants to “Make music that encourages audiences the freedom to feel real emotions.”

His father, an avid music lover had a very diverse record collection which helped foster Femi’s musical appetites. Due to this early exposure, he developed an openness which has afforded him vast range in his composition abilities. The different rhythms and cadences of Pop, R&B/Soul, Funk, Rock, Hip hop, Salsa, Afrobeat, Punk etc all contribute to making him the artist he is today.

Despite his unique sound, range and performance capabilities, many among his family are skeptical of the viability of his decision to pursue music as a professional career, discouraging this move at every turn. Their preference being for him to opt into what any truly gifted artist would consider a life of misery, a steady 9 to 5 profession. Femi remains defiant and will continue to rebel, thus here we are
